What 38, 39, 40, 84 means
Codes 38, 39, 40 and 84 relate to the vent damper on GE UltraFresh front-load washers (GFW510, GFW550, GFW650 and GFW850 series, 2020 and newer), the part of the UltraFresh system that opens and closes an air path. The control sets one when the damper's feedback does not show it closed or open after five seconds. They are stored in the error history for a technician, and the display on these models can show them as well. Owners may notice a cycle that pauses or odd odors and moisture.
Common causes of 38, 39, 40, 84
- Damper moving freely and reaching its end position
- Damper motor or actuator
- Wiring and feedback connector
- Blockage or lint around the vent path
1. Open the door after the cycle and check that the seal and the area around it are clean and dry. 2. Wipe away lint or residue you can see without removing any panel. 3. Leave the door ajar between loads so the drum can air out.
- Missing feedback could be a stuck damper, a weak actuator or a wiring problem, and the numbers do not separate them
- We check that the damper moves, the actuator responds and the feedback reaches the control
- You approve a written price before parts are replaced, and repairs have a 30-day workmanship warranty

What is a vent damper?
It is a movable flap in the UltraFresh air path. The control expects a position signal after it moves, and these numbers mean that signal did not arrive.
Do the four numbers mean different parts?
They describe damper feedback conditions. We read the exact one first. The damper only matters for the UltraFresh air path, so the main wash and spin functions normally continue while we check it.
Can I keep washing?
Often yes, but have it checked if odors or moisture build. Keeping the door ajar after each load helps the drum dry, which limits odors while the damper is waiting to be checked.
