GE Electric Cooktop Element Not Heating: What to Check First

One dead element on a GE glass cooktop is usually something you can narrow down in minutes. Here are the checks that separate a cooktop issue from a pan or a power issue.

When one burner on a GE electric glass cooktop will not heat but the rest do, you are dealing with a local problem. That is helpful, because it rules out the whole house supply.

Eliminate the Easy Causes

  • The pan: a warped or very small pan may not contact the glass well. Try a flat-bottomed pan that matches the burner size.
  • The control: turn the knob or touch control fully on and wait. Some elements cycle, so check the heat after a minute.
  • Control lock: a touch-control cooktop may have a lock mode that ignores input. Your manual shows the release.
  • A dual or triple element: if only the outer ring is dead, the setting for that ring may be switched off.

What the Light Tells You

Many cooktops show a hot-surface light even when the element has failed, because that light follows the glass temperature. A burner indicator that glows with no heat can point to the element or its connection. A dark indicator can point to the control.

Look, Do Not Touch

Inspect the glass for cracks. A cracked ceramic top is a safety problem; stop using the cooktop, switch off its breaker and have it checked. Discoloration or burn marks on the glass are normal.

Limits of the Surface View

An element that never heats could be a worn element, a loose or burned connection, an infinite switch or a control problem. All of those look the same from above. If two elements fail together, that points toward shared wiring or the control instead.
