What E alternating with o means
On GE Profile induction cooktops PHP900 and PHP960, an E alternating with a lowercase o is the Over Temperature alert. The induction element or electronics have overheated, for example from an empty pan left on a high power level, or from a lack of cooling air under the cooktop. The control cuts power to protect itself, so the element stops heating until things cool down. Good airflow beneath the cooktop is part of how it stays within safe limits.
Common causes of E alternating with o
- Empty pan heated on a high power level
- Air inlet under the cooktop blocked or restricted
- Electronics heat-soaked after long high-power cooking
- Cooling fan not moving enough air
1. Remove any empty pan from the cooktop right away. 2. Touch ON/OFF and let the cooktop cool for 30 to 45 minutes. 3. Make sure the air inlet below the cooktop is unobstructed by boxes or stored items. 4. If the alert persists after cooling, call for service.
- If the alert returns after a full cool-down with nothing blocking airflow, we check the cooling fan and the temperature sensing that trips it.
- We also check the installation clearances below the cooktop.

What does E alternating with o mean?
It is the Over Temperature alert. The induction element or electronics got too hot, often from an empty pan on a high setting or from poor airflow under the cooktop.
How long should I let it cool?
Touch ON/OFF and wait 30 to 45 minutes with nothing on the cooktop. Also check that the air inlet beneath it is clear before cooking again.
Why does it keep happening?
Repeats usually mean the airflow is restricted or the cooling fan is not doing its job. We check both, plus the sensing, instead of assuming the electronics are bad.
