What Element drops power means

On GE, GE Profile and Café induction cooktops and ranges, such as the PHP9030DJBB, PHS930SLSS and CHP90302TSS, an element can drop its power level or turn off during use. The cooktop surface temperature got very hot, most commonly because a pan was heated empty or boiled dry. The cooktop lowers or shuts off the element on purpose to protect itself, and the internal fan keeps running to bring the temperature down.

Common causes of Element drops power

  • Pan heated empty or boiled dry
  • Cooktop surface temperature very hot
  • Internal fan still cooling the electronics
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn the element off and remove the pan from the cooktop. 2. Let the internal fan cool the cooktop before continuing. 3. Use enough liquid or oil in the pan next time. 4. Keep the vents below the cooktop clear of boxes and stored items.

! Why to stop there
  • If the element keeps dropping power with a filled pan and a cool cooktop, we check the temperature sensing, the fan and airflow.
  • We also check the pan size and base.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
Element drops powerElement drops power questions
Why did my induction burner turn down by itself?

The cooktop surface temperature got very hot, often from an empty or boiled-dry pan. The cooktop lowers power or turns the element off to protect itself.

What should I do?

Turn the element off, remove the pan and let the internal fan cool the cooktop. Then continue with a pan that has enough liquid or oil in it.

Does this mean something is broken?

Not usually. It is protective behavior. If it keeps happening during normal cooking with a filled pan, we test the temperature sensing and the cooling fan.
