What Hot surface indicator stays on means
On GE, GE Profile and Café radiant and induction cooktops, the hot surface indicator can seem to stay on longer than expected. Radiant models use either a sensor, which turns the light off once the surface falls below about 150°F, or a timer that keeps it lit for up to 30 minutes after the last burner is off. Induction surface lights also go out when the surface drops below about 150°F. In all cases the delay is by design.
Common causes of Hot surface indicator stays on
- Sensor model waiting for the surface to cool below about 150°F
- Time-based model running its full 30 minutes
- Heat held in the glass by recent heavy cooking
1. Treat the glass as hot while the light is on. 2. Wait for the surface to cool; the light goes out by itself. 3. Keep towels, plastic and paper off the glass. 4. Confirm all elements are turned off and no pad is being pressed.
- If the light stays on for hours with every element off, we check the sensing circuit and whether an element is being switched on.
- We also check the control for a stuck pad.

Why does the hot light stay on after I turn the burners off?
It stays lit until the surface cools, or for up to 30 minutes on time-based radiant models. This is normal behavior and is there to protect you from accidental burns.
At what temperature does the light go off?
On sensor-based radiant and induction cooktops it goes off when the surface drops below about 150°F. Time-based models count down regardless of the actual glass temperature at that moment.
Should I be worried if it stays on a long time?
Not usually. If it stays on for hours with every element off, the sensing or control should be checked, and we can test that circuit during a visit.
