What WAIT means

On GE glass touch-button electric cooktops such as the JP938, JP939, JP969, JP950 and JP980, the message WAIT shows while the glass touch board initializes at power-up. It normally disappears within moments. If the initialization does not complete, WAIT stays on and the cooktop cannot be used, because the control never finishes learning its touch pads. A keypad covered with residue or moisture can stop the touch board from starting properly.

Common causes of WAIT

  • Touch board unable to finish its start-up check
  • Residue, moisture or an object on the keypad area at power-up
  • Power glitch that interrupted the start-up check
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn power off at the breaker. 2. Clean and dry the keypad area and remove anything resting on it, such as pans, cloths or utensils. 3. Turn power back on and wait for WAIT to clear. 4. If WAIT returns, service is required, so call us instead of repeating the restart many times.

! Why to stop there
  • If WAIT stays on after a clean restart, we test the touch board, its connector and the supply to the control.
  • We check for moisture under the glass.
  • Written price first, and a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
WAITWAIT questions
What does WAIT mean on my cooktop?

The glass touch board is starting up after power returns. It should clear quickly. If it never clears, the touch board did not finish initializing and the cooktop cannot be used.

How do I restart the cooktop safely?

Turn the breaker off, clean and dry the keypad area, then switch the breaker back on. Do not remove any panels or touch wiring while the power is on or off.

When is WAIT a real problem?

If it returns after a clean restart or stays on, the touch board or its connection needs testing. That is the point where you should call us so we can find the cause.
