Cloudy Glasses From a GE Dishwasher: Hard Water or Detergent?

Cloudy glassware from a GE dishwasher is usually film or etching, and the two need opposite fixes. A quick vinegar test tells you which one you have before you change anything else.

Glasses that come out hazy are almost never a sign the dishwasher is broken. The haze is either a film sitting on the glass, which can be removed, or etching in the glass itself, which cannot. Telling them apart takes one test and saves you from changing the wrong thing.

The Film Test

Soak a cloudy glass in plain white vinegar for about five minutes. If the haze wipes away, it was mineral film, common with hard water. If the glass stays cloudy, the surface is etched and no setting on the dishwasher will bring it back.

If It Is Film

  • Rinse aid: check that the dispenser has some in it and that the setting on your GE is not at its lowest. A dispenser that is always empty may be leaking or not releasing.
  • Detergent amount: too little leaves minerals behind, and too much leaves soap residue. Follow the pack, then adjust one step at a time.
  • Water temperature: run the kitchen tap until it is hot before starting a cycle, since the wash needs hot water to dissolve detergent properly.
  • Filter and spray arms: a clogged filter lets soil circulate and dull the glass.

If It Is Etching

Etching comes from soft or over-treated water combined with too much detergent over many cycles. Reduce the detergent, skip the extra-hot pre-rinse, and accept that the existing damage stays.

Limits of a Glass Check

A haze that returns right away, together with dishes that also feel gritty, can point to a heating or circulation problem inside the machine. That is the point where a hands-on check beats guessing.
