GE Washer Leaving Detergent Residue or Making Too Many Suds

White streaks, slimy clothes and suds that spill from the drawer usually trace to detergent type and amount, not a broken washer. Here is how to sort out which one you have.

When a GE washer leaves white residue on dark clothes or fills the drum with foam, the cause is most often too much detergent or the wrong kind. High-efficiency washers use little water, and the detergent has nowhere to go if you measure by habit from an older machine.

Check These First

  • Detergent type: if your washer is a high-efficiency model, look for the HE mark on the detergent label. Regular detergent foams far more.
  • Amount: measure to the line on the cap for a normal load, and use less for a small or lightly soiled load. More soap does not mean cleaner clothes.
  • Load size: a stuffed drum cannot rinse. Clothes should move freely.
  • Water hardness: hard water makes detergent harder to rinse out, so an extra rinse can help.

Fixing Suds Right Now

If foam is already escaping, pause the cycle and let it settle. Run a rinse-and-spin with no detergent, repeating if needed. Do not pour in more soap to cut the foam.

The Dispenser Drawer

Pull the drawer if your model allows it and rinse it under warm water. Dried detergent and softener build up as a gel that blocks the flow and sends product into the wrong part of the cycle. A drawer cleaned once a month avoids most of this.

What This Does Not Prove

Residue can also come from a drain that is partly blocked or a pump that clears the tub slowly. If suds were never the problem and clothes still come out wet or gritty, the machine needs a test, not more rinsing.
