GE Washer Banging During Spin: Leveling, Shipping Bolts and Load Balance

A loud, rocking washer is often a leveling or load problem rather than a broken part. Here is a practical order of checks, from floor to feet to the load itself.

A GE washer that bangs, rocks or creeps across the floor during spin is usually telling you about its footing or its load. These checks take minutes and often end the noise for good.

Check the Floor and Feet

Many Houston laundry areas sit on slab floors that slope slightly, or on a raised platform. Press down on each top corner of the washer. If it rocks diagonally, one foot is not carrying weight. Raise or lower the leveling feet until the machine does not move, then tighten the lock nuts against the base so they do not turn back.

Shipping Hardware

If the washer is new, or was moved recently, make sure any shipping bolts, bars or foam blocks have been removed. A front-load washer with transit hardware still in place will shake violently. Your manual shows where these were fitted for your model.

Balance the Load

  • A single heavy item, such as a comforter or a pair of jeans, can pull the drum off-center. Mix it with lighter items.
  • Do not wash a bulky item alone.
  • Avoid overloading, which leaves the clothes with no room to redistribute.

Hoses and Walls

Check that hoses and the drain line are not wedged tight against the wall or cabinet, since they transmit vibration.

Where These Checks Stop

If the washer is level, the load is balanced and the bolts are out, but the noise is a grinding or a deep knock, the drum support, bearing or shock absorbers may be worn. The sound alone cannot tell us which. A lighter vibration that arrives only in the final spin points more to balance than to wear.

For GE washers that still shake after leveling, start at the washer repair page and see the service area for coverage. We state the cost in writing before starting, and our work is covered for 30 days.

Tell us the model and the code. We will bring the part.
