What ERR 01 means
ERR 01 appears on older GE water softeners with a numbered error chart, such as the GXSF27E, GXSF31E and GXSF40H from roughly 2005 to 2015. It points to a possible defect in the motor, in the wiring harness or connection to the switch, in the position switch, or in the control. The display shows ERR 01 until it is cleared. Newer GXSH and GXSF V-series units show only a plain Err, so this numbered version belongs to the older generation.
Common causes of ERR 01
- Motor operation
- Wiring harness and switch connection
- Position switch
- Control board
1. Unplug the transformer. 2. Correct any loose or incorrect wiring at the board or switch. 3. Plug the transformer in and wait at least 6 minutes. 4. If ERR 01 returns, call us. Keep the brine tank lid closed while you wait. Water use is fine meanwhile.
- The code lists several possible areas, and the cause has not been corrected if it returns.
- We test the motor, harness and switch.
- Motor and harness are tested before the control is named, with the price in writing.

Why wait 6 minutes?
The control re-checks after about that long. If the code returns once the transformer is back in, the cause was not corrected and the area named by the code still needs work.
Is ERR 01 different from ERR 02?
Yes. ERR 01 includes the motor and the harness or switch connection. ERR 02 points to the position switch or the control, so the checks begin in different places.
Can I replace the motor?
We advise leaving that to a technician. Opening the control area and handling the motor can disturb wiring, and we give you a written price before any work.
Still seeing ERR 01?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
