What 3 means

On GE Zoneline AZ90 and AZ91 single-package vertical units, for example the AZ91H09D2C, code 3 means the indoor temperature sensor is open or shorted. The control cannot read the room temperature, so it falls back on defaults of 75°F for cooling and 68°F for heating and keeps operating. You may find the room settles at those temperatures regardless of your setting. The AZ95 generation uses code 3 for thermostat wiring.

Common causes of 3

  • Indoor temperature sensor open or shorted
  • Sensor connection at the control
  • Sensor reading out of range
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Start by pressing ENTER, which shows the codes in memory, and use SCROLL to page through. 2. Check that nothing is blocking the room air intake. 3. Notice whether the unit holds close to the default temperatures instead of your setpoint. 4. Keep using the unit if the room is comfortable. 5. Hold ENTER and SCROLL for 3 to 6 seconds to clear the history after service, and report a repeat.

! Why to stop there
  • The unit keeps working, so the question is whether the sensor or its connection needs attention.
  • We check the sensor against the room and test the circuit.
  • We state a written price first and back the repair with a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
33 questions
Why does the room feel off with code 3?

The unit is using default temperatures of 75°F cooling and 68°F heating, not your setting, because it cannot read the room. Defaults apply until the sensor reading returns.

Can I keep using the unit?

Yes. It keeps operating on the defaults. If those defaults suit the room, there is no rush, but guests may find the control ineffective. Staff should still note it for the next visit.

Does the right-hand number matter?

It is the history count. A rising count means the problem keeps coming back, which is useful information for the visit. Staff can use it to judge how persistent the problem is.
