What CI means
On GE refrigerators with electronic dispenser controls, including Profile and Café models, CI tells you the ice maker may not be operating properly. The ice maker is the unit that fills with water, freezes it and drops cubes into the bin. When the control sees that it is not completing its work, it shows CI. You may notice little or no ice in the bin, or fewer cubes than usual.
Common causes of CI
- Ice maker not completing its fill or release cycle
- Water supply to the ice maker slow or shut off
- Ice jammed in the mold or chute
- Freezer too warm to freeze the ice properly
1. Check the ice maker and look for jammed or stuck cubes. 2. Make sure the ice maker is switched on and its arm or sensor is not blocked. 3. Check that the water supply valve to the refrigerator is open. 4. Allow a day for ice to rebuild after any change. 5. If CI stays, call us.
- The ice maker depends on water, freezer temperature and its own mechanism, and any of the three can cause the code.
- We check the supply, the freezer temperature and the ice maker cycle one at a time.
- A leaking fill line can hide behind the refrigerator, so we inspect it as well.

Why is there no ice and CI on the display?
The ice maker is not finishing its cycle. It can be a water supply issue, a jam or a problem in the unit. Checking the ice maker is the first step.
How long until new ice appears?
Ice takes time to freeze and fill the bin, often a day. If nothing appears after a day and CI remains, the ice maker needs testing.
Does CI affect cooling?
Usually not. The ice maker is a separate system from cooling. We still check the freezer temperature, because a warm freezer can stop the ice maker.
Still seeing CI?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
