What DE means
On GE refrigerators with electronic dispenser controls, including Profile and Café models, DE means demo mode is on. Demo mode is the store-display setting. The lights and controls respond normally but cooling is disabled, so the refrigerator looks alive while warming up inside. It is a setting rather than a breakdown. How it is turned off varies by model, and unplugging does not work on some of them.
Common causes of DE
- Demo mode turned on by a store display setting or by pressing a pad combination
- Unit installed straight from a showroom without exiting demo
- Control retained the setting after a power interruption
1. Unplug the refrigerator for one to two minutes. 2. Plug it back in and watch the display. 3. If DE stays, find the demo-mode exit steps for your exact model number. 4. Move food to a cooler if the inside already feels warm. 5. Call us with your model number if DE will not leave.
- The exit method differs between models, so we need your model number to know which steps apply.
- If DE returns after unplugging, the control is holding the setting.
- Food safety matters while cooling is off, so a quick call is worthwhile.
Other Refrigerator codes
Why is my new refrigerator warm and showing DE?
Demo mode is on, which keeps the lights and controls running but turns cooling off. It is common on floor models that were moved straight from a showroom. Once demo mode is switched off, normal cooling starts and the inside gets cold.
Will unplugging turn demo mode off?
On many models, unplugging for a minute or two works. On some it does not, because the exit method differs by model. Tell us your model number and we will give you the right steps for your refrigerator.
Can demo mode damage anything?
No. It is only a setting, and the refrigerator is not harmed. Check the food, let the refrigerator run in normal mode, and give it several hours to reach a safe temperature before you restock it.
Still unsure about DE?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
