What PF means

On GE refrigerators with electronic dispenser controls, including Profile and Café models, PF means power to the refrigerator was interrupted. The control lost power for a time, whether from an outage, a tripped breaker or an unplugged cord, and it displays PF afterward as a notice. It does not say the appliance is damaged. It reminds you to check that the food stayed cold while the power was out.

Common causes of PF

  • Utility outage or brief flicker
  • Tripped breaker or GFCI protecting the outlet
  • Cord pulled out while cleaning or moving the refrigerator
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Check that the refrigerator is running and the lights are on. 2. Look at the food in the freezer and fresh food sections for signs of warming. 3. Keep the doors closed while the temperature recovers. 4. Check that nothing else on the same circuit has tripped. 5. If PF keeps appearing without outages, call us.

! Why to stop there
  • If PF returns without any outage, the power at the outlet or the control may be intermittent.
  • We check the outlet, cord and control supply for dropouts.
  • Repeated power loss can harm the cooling parts, so we look at the cause.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
PFPF questions
Does PF mean the refrigerator is broken?

No. It is a notice that power was interrupted. The refrigerator usually restarts on its own. Check the food, since the temperature may have risen during the outage.

PF keeps coming back. Why?

Something is cutting power repeatedly, such as a loose plug, an overloaded circuit or a weak outlet. We can check the supply and the control.

Should I throw out the food?

That depends on how long the power was out and how the food feels. When in doubt, use your own judgment on perishables. We can help diagnose the cooling afterward.
