What Hi AL / Lo AL means
Hi AL and Lo AL appear on GE, GE Profile and Cafe refrigerators with a hot water or brewer system (PFE28P, PYE22P and PFH28 series). They are a setting indicator and not a problem. Hi AL limits the hot water temperature so it does not reach boiling at elevations above 5000 feet, and Lo AL is the low-altitude setting. Homes below that elevation use Lo AL.
Common causes of Hi AL / Lo AL
- High-altitude setting toggled by an accidental press
- Setting changed when someone held the keys down
1. Press and hold Fridge and Door Alarm to toggle between Hi AL and Lo AL. 2. Read the display to see which setting is now shown. 3. Use Lo AL below 5000 feet. 4. Check that hot water works as you expect.
- If the display does not change when you press the keys, the control needs testing.
- We check the key response.
- This is rarely a repair.

What do Hi AL and Lo AL mean?
They are altitude settings for the hot water system. Hi AL limits the hot water temperature above 5000 feet, and Lo AL is for low altitude.
How do I switch?
Press and hold Fridge and Door Alarm to toggle between them. It tells you which altitude setting the hot water system is using at the moment, and you can change it back at any time.
Is it an error?
No. It is a setting indicator, not a problem with the refrigerator. If hot water seems cooler than expected, Hi AL is the likely reason, so toggle it and see.
