What 37 means
Code 37 on GE UltraFresh front-load washers, the GFW510, GFW550, GFW650 and GFW850 series, is a heater check. The control turned the heater on and its thermistor did not see at least a 3 degree F rise after five minutes. Without that rise the control assumes the water is not heating. The number is in the stored error history a technician reads, with the display as the other place it can appear on these models. You may see lukewarm or cold water on heated cycles, or a cycle that runs long.
Common causes of 37
- Heating element not warming the water
- Temperature thermistor reading
- Wiring to the heater and thermistor
- Control output to the heater
1. Run a heated cycle with a small load and note whether the water feels warm. 2. Make sure the hot water supply valve is open and the household hot water is actually hot. 3. Leave the cabinet closed; heater parts are not an owner repair.
- No temperature rise can mean a dead heater, a sensor that reads wrong or wiring, and each needs a different fix
- We check the heater and thermistor circuits and watch the temperature during a run
- The estimate is written and approved before work, with a 30-day workmanship warranty

Is cold water in a hot cycle code 37?
It can be, but check your hot supply first. If the house water is hot and the wash stays cool, we test the heater and its sensor, so you are not charged for a part you do not need.
Can I use cold-water cycles?
Yes, those do not need the heater. Water that runs warm on the house side but cool in the tub is the clue we look for when testing the heater.
How long does the heater test take?
The control waits five minutes with the heater on before deciding the water has not warmed. That is why heated cycles can seem slow before stopping.
