What 20 means
Code 20 on GE UltraFresh front-load washers (GFW510, GFW550, GFW650 and GFW850, 2020 and newer) means the control calculated that more than 41 gallons had entered the tub, which is a flood-level volume. It stops the fill to protect the floor. It is logged in the stored error history for a technician and may also be shown on the display on these models. You may find a cycle that stopped with the drum very full, water not draining, or a fill valve that kept running.
Common causes of 20
- Water inlet valve that does not shut off
- Pressure sensor misreading the water level
- Drain that is blocked while the tub fills
- Control not closing the fill command
1. Turn both water supply valves off at the wall right away. 2. If water is on the floor, unplug the washer only if the cord and outlet are dry and you can reach them without stepping in water. 3. Do not start another cycle until the tub is drained and the cause is checked.
- Whether the valve, the level sensing or the drain caused the overfill cannot be told from the number alone
- We check the inlet valves for leak-through, the level sensor and the drain path
- A written price comes first, and the repair is covered by a 30-day workmanship warranty
Other Washer codes
What should I do right now?
Close both supply valves, keep clear of standing water near the outlet, and do not run the washer again until it is inspected. Overfill can reach the floor.
Is a full drum with no drain always code 20?
No, a blocked drain looks similar but code 20 is about the calculated fill volume exceeding the limit, so we check inlet and level sensing too.
Can I just drain it and try again?
We would not. The cause of the overfill should be found first so it cannot repeat. Leaving it running or refilling could put water on the floor, so shut the valves and wait for us.
Still seeing 20?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
