What 24 means

Code 24 on a GE UltraFresh front-load washer, the GFW510, GFW550, GFW650 and GFW850 series, means the control read an impossible door condition: the door looked both open and locked for five seconds in a row. Since both cannot be true, the control treats it as a door-circuit problem. Behind that behavior, the number is kept in the stored error history, which a technician reads, and these models can also show it on the display. You may see a cycle that will not begin, pauses, or a door that behaves inconsistently.

Common causes of 24

  • Door switch and lock switch signals that disagree
  • Door latch alignment
  • Wiring or connector in the door circuit
  • Control reading of the door inputs
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Open the door, remove anything caught in the opening, and close it until you hear it latch. 2. Look at the rubber seal for folds that can keep the door from seating. 3. If the washer still reports a door problem, stop using it and do not force the latch.

! Why to stop there
  • The conflicting door signals could come from the switch, the lock, the wiring or the control, and the number does not say which
  • We read the door circuit while opening and closing the door to see which signal is wrong
  • A written price is approved before work, and repairs include a 30-day workmanship warranty
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
2424 questions
Can a door really be open and locked?

No, which is why the control flags it. One of the door signals is wrong, and we find out which by testing the switch and lock readings.

Can a loose latch cause this?

A poorly seated door can give mixed readings, so we check the latch and strike first, then the circuit. If the code returns after a clean, firm close, the door circuit itself is what we test next.

Can I keep using it?

If the door will not lock reliably, we advise waiting for the check. It is better to wait for us than to run cycles with an unreliable door lock circuit.
