What 27 means
Code 27 on GE UltraFresh front-load washers (GFW510, GFW550, GFW650 and GFW850 series, 2020 and newer) means the inverter, the board that drives the motor, reported a temperature above 221 degrees F for five seconds. The control stops the motor to protect the drive. The stored error history holds the number for a technician, and on these models the display can show it too. You may see a cycle that stops mid-wash or spin, a warm cabinet, or a washer that will not restart right away.
Common causes of 27
- Heavy or jammed drum making the motor work harder
- Inverter board cooling or ventilation around the cabinet
- Motor drive circuit running hot
- Wiring or connectors at the drive
1. Stop the cycle and let the washer sit with the door open so the cabinet can cool. 2. Make sure nothing is stacked against the washer and air can move around the back and sides. 3. If you smell hot or burning plastic, unplug it and call us.
- Whether the heat came from a heavy load, poor airflow or the drive itself stays unknown until it is checked
- We check the drum for drag, the airflow around the washer and the drive circuit
- The price is written and approved before work starts, with a 30-day workmanship warranty
Other Washer codes
Is it safe to restart after it cools?
A single stop with a heavy load may not repeat, but if the code returns or you smell heat, stop using it. Repeated overheating can damage the drive.
Could my load size matter?
Yes. A packed drum makes the motor work harder, which can add heat. Try a lighter load once cool. Heat that returns on lighter loads is more worrying, because it points away from the laundry and toward the drive or airflow.
Where does the heat come from?
Usually from the motor drive working hard against a heavy drum, poor airflow or a weak drive board. We test each in turn rather than guessing.
