What ERR 05 means
ERR 05 appears on older GE water softeners in the GXSF27E, GXSF31E and GXSF40H generation, whose electronic control has a numbered diagnostic chart. Unlike the position-switch entry beside it, this one points at the control itself. The display shows ERR 05 and the unit may stop running its regeneration cycles, so you can end up with hard water until the control is dealt with.
Common causes of ERR 05
- Control board not completing its own self-check
- Loose or incorrectly seated wiring at the board
- Power interruption or surge that upset the control
1. Unplug the transformer from the outlet. 2. Check that the wires you can see are fully seated and not pulled loose. 3. Plug the transformer in again. 4. Wait at least 6 minutes. The code returns if the cause was not corrected, and then the softener needs a visit.
- If ERR 05 returns after the wait, the control is the main suspect and wiring has to be ruled out first.
- We check the connections and the power feed to the control before judging the board.
- We quote the repair in writing before starting, and the work carries our 30-day workmanship warranty.
Other Water Softener & Filtration codes
What is ERR 05 on a GE softener?
It is a control entry in the diagnostic chart of older GXSF-generation softeners. The code says the control itself needs attention rather than a named sensor.
How long should I wait after unplugging?
At least 6 minutes with the transformer unplugged, then plug it back in. If the code comes straight back, the problem is still there and a check is needed.
Will the softener keep working?
It may not regenerate properly while the code is showing. Hard water can return, so we suggest having the control tested. It is worth getting checked before the hardness shows up in your dishes or fixtures.
