What dE / E2 means
On GE electronic-control washers from 2017 onward, the Consumer Help Indicator can show dE, and it means the lid is open. The washer will not run or spin while the lid is up, so it pauses and waits. You may see dE after starting a cycle with the lid not shut or when something has kept the lid from latching. Once the lid is down and latched, the cycle can resume. On some Space-Saving GE washers the same lid-open signal shows as E2 instead of dE.
Common causes of dE / E2
- Lid left open or not fully closed
- Item caught under the lid edge
- Lid switch not registering the closed lid
1. Close the lid fully until it latches. 2. Check that no clothing is caught at the edge of the lid or the opening. 3. Press Start to continue the cycle. 4. If dE stays on with the lid closed, stop and call us.
- With the lid closed and dE still showing, the lid switch may not be registering.
- We test the switch and its wiring.
- Please do not tape or hold the switch down.

Does dE mean something is broken?
Not usually. It means the lid is open, and the washer will not run or spin until it is closed. Shut the lid fully, press Start, and the cycle can carry on from where it paused.
The lid is closed but dE stays. Why?
The lid switch may not be sensing the closed lid, or something is caught under the edge. If a quick check finds nothing, we test the switch and its wiring and tell you what we find.
Can I bypass the switch to keep washing?
No, please do not. The switch stops the drum from turning when the lid is up, which protects your hands. We can repair it properly, and you receive a written price before we start.
Still unsure about dE / E2?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
