What 26 means
On GE UltraFresh front-load washers, the GFW510, GFW550, GFW650 and GFW850 series, code 26 records that the control detected an out-of-balance load and could not bring the drum up to its final target spin speed. The washer then stops or shortens the final spin, leaving clothes wetter than usual. Readable from the stored error history by a technician, the number may also be shown on the display on these models. You may hear thumping or find a soggy load at the end of the cycle.
Common causes of 26
- Bunched or oversized laundry
- Washer not level or feet not firmly on the floor
- Drum or suspension movement that lets the load shift
- Speed feedback during the final spin
1. Open the door, spread the wet laundry evenly and remove any single heavy item such as a rug or comforter. 2. Run a spin or rinse-and-spin cycle with a smaller, mixed load. 3. Push down on each top corner and make sure the washer does not rock.
- If a small, balanced load still ends the spin early, the cause moves to the washer rather than the laundry
- We check leveling, drum movement and the spin speed the control reaches
- Repairs are priced in writing first and carry a 30-day workmanship warranty
Other Washer codes
Why are my clothes still wet?
When the load is unbalanced, the control will not spin at full speed, so clothes can come out wetter. Redistributing the load usually tells us whether the washer itself is involved.
Is code 26 dangerous?
It is a protective stop, not a hazard, though violent shaking should be taken seriously and the washer stopped. It stops a spin that would shake the cabinet, so treat it as the washer protecting itself, while violent shaking means stop it right away.
Will the washer finish the cycle?
It usually ends or shortens the spin and moves on, leaving clothes damp, so you may need to rerun a spin with a better balanced load.
