What 30 means

Code 30 on a GE UltraFresh front-load washer, the GFW510, GFW550, GFW650 and GFW850 series, means the main board measured more than 160 volts AC at its power input. That is higher than the board is built to accept, so the control stops to protect itself. Its number is saved in the stored error history for a technician, and these models may display it as well. The washer may refuse to start, shut off mid-cycle or restart by itself after power returns.

Common causes of 30

  • High supply voltage at the outlet
  • Loose or damaged power cord and plug
  • Shared circuit overloaded by other equipment
  • Main board voltage monitoring
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Stop using the washer and unplug it if the cord, plug or outlet looks scorched, hot or damaged. 2. Run the washer on its own and not through an extension cord or power strip. 3. If lights in the house flicker or other appliances act up, tell us when we visit.

! Why to stop there
  • High voltage can come from the house supply or from the board misreading it, and the number alone cannot say which
  • We measure the supply at the outlet and check the cord and connections
  • A written price is approved before work, and repairs carry a 30-day workmanship warranty
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
3030 questions
Is this a wiring problem in my house?

It can be, which is why we check the outlet voltage first. If the supply is normal, we look at the board. Low outlet quality or a damaged cord is just as likely as a bad board, so the supply gets tested first.

Should I keep trying to start it?

No. Repeated tries with a power problem can stress the control. Stop and have the supply checked. A cord or outlet that looks burned or smells hot should be treated as an emergency, and the washer should be unplugged.

Why does the voltage matter so much?

The main board is designed for a normal supply range. Well above it, electronics can be damaged, so the control shuts the washer down first.
