What 22 means
Code 22 on GE UltraFresh front-load washers, the GFW510, GFW550, GFW650 and GFW850 series, records out-of-balance detection during the dry-load sensing step. The control sensed a large, unevenly distributed wet load, gave up on dry-load sensing and switched to wet-load sensing instead. The record lives in the stored error history that a technician reads, and on these models the display may show it as well. You may notice the drum thumping or the washer starting its cycle in a different way than normal.
Common causes of 22
- Heavy or bunched laundry
- Wet clothes put in before the cycle started
- Washer not level on the floor
- Drum movement or suspension that lets the load shift
1. Pause the washer and redistribute the clothes so the heaviest pieces are spread around the drum. 2. Take out a few items if the drum is packed, and avoid washing one bulky item alone. 3. Check that all four feet touch the floor and the washer does not rock.
- If a small, even load still produces code 22, the problem moves from the laundry to the washer
- We check leveling, drum movement and the sensing step that detects imbalance
- The price is written and approved before work begins, with a 30-day workmanship warranty on repairs

Is code 22 serious?
By itself it means the control switched sensing methods because the load was lopsided. It is a note, not a shutdown, but repeated occurrences are worth a check.
How do I prevent it?
Mix large and small items, avoid single bulky pieces, and make sure the washer sits level so the drum can balance itself. Weighing laundry on a bathroom scale for each batch is not needed; a rough even mix is enough.
Does a small load fix code 22?
Often it helps, since a lopsided wet bundle is the usual trigger. If a small even load also trips it, the washer needs a look.
