What E alternating with c means
On GE Profile induction cooktops PHP900 and PHP960, an E alternating with a lowercase c is the Clear Keypad alert. The keypad is sensing continuous activation of one or more pads, which can happen when water, food spills, a utensil or other objects are sitting on the touch controls. The cooktop treats a pad that never releases as a stuck key and stops accepting commands until the area is cleared, so the alert usually points to something resting on the glass.
Common causes of E alternating with c
- Water or spilled food on the keypad area
- Utensil, pot lid or towel resting on the touch controls
- Moisture or residue that makes a pad read as constantly pressed
1. Clean and dry the keypad area and clear off anything resting on it, including cloths, lids and utensils. 2. Touch ON/OFF to reset the controls. 3. Select the power level again. 4. If the alert persists after the glass is clean and dry, call for service.
- If E and c keep returning on a clean, dry cooktop, we check whether a pad or its sensing circuit is reading a false touch.
- We also check the control for moisture damage.

What does E alternating with c mean?
It is the Clear Keypad alert: the cooktop senses constant activation of one or more pads. Water, spills, a utensil or another object on the controls is the usual reason.
How do I clear it?
Wipe the keypad area clean and dry, move anything off the controls, touch ON/OFF, and select the power level again. The cooktop should respond normally once nothing is pressing the pads.
What if it comes back on a dry cooktop?
Then a pad may be reading touch that is not there. That needs a test of the keypad and control, which is what we do on the visit.
