What Lid means
On GE top-load washers with a text display from 2017 on, such as the GTW720, GTW840, GTW685 and GTW750 and the Profile PTW600, PTW700 and PTW900 lines, the display scrolls Lid when three cycles have been started without the lid being opened. The washer will not start another cycle until the lid is lifted. The same word also scrolls if you press Start with the lid up, because the lid must be down for every cycle except Bulky. Older 2013-era GTWN models scroll LID only for a lid left open at Start. A GE Space-Saving washer uses a different code, dE, for its lid.
Common causes of Lid
- Whether the lid was actually raised between recent cycles
- Lid closing fully when Start is pressed
- Lid switch signal reaching the control
1. Lift the lid all the way up, then lower it until it is fully closed. 2. Press Start for a new cycle. 3. If you were not using the Bulky cycle, check that nothing, such as a sleeve or towel, is holding the lid slightly open. 4. If the message scrolls again right away, stop and let us check it.
- A lid that closes properly but still triggers the message points us to the lid switch circuit, which we test rather than guess at.
- We look at the lid hinge and striker for wear that keeps the switch from closing.
- You get a written price before work begins, and our repair carries a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Other Washer codes
Why does my GE washer say Lid after several loads?
It counts cycles started without the lid being opened. Three in a row triggers the message. Lifting the lid once and closing it again clears the count and lets you start the next cycle.
Does Lid mean the lid switch is broken?
Not usually. Most of the time it is the cycle-count reminder or a lid left slightly open. Only if it repeats after you raise and lower the lid each time do we test the switch circuit.
Why can I run Bulky with the lid open?
On these models the Bulky cycle is the exception to the closed-lid rule, so the washer lets you start it with the lid up. Every other cycle needs the lid down.
Still unsure about Lid?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
