What F (flashing, induction) means

On GE and Profile induction cooktops such as the PHP9036, PHP7030 and PHP6036 series, a flashing F tells you the element cannot find usable cookware. It appears when the pan is lifted off, when no pan was on the element at power-on, or when the pan is not centered over the cooking zone. This is a warning display, not a breakdown. If nothing suitable is placed on the zone, the element switches itself off within about 30 seconds, and the F keeps flashing until a pan is detected.

Common causes of F (flashing, induction)

  • Pan removed from the element during cooking
  • No pan on the element when the zone was turned on
  • Pan sitting off-center on the cooking zone
  • Cookware that is not magnetic, so the induction field cannot sense it
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Place a pan on the zone and center it over the marked circle. 2. Use cookware a magnet sticks to, such as cast iron or magnetic stainless steel. 3. Make sure the pan bottom is flat and dry. 4. Turn the zone on again. 5. Wipe off any spill from the glass so the pan sits flat.

! Why to stop there
  • If a magnetic, centered pan still gives a flashing F, the sensing circuit under the glass needs testing.
  • Intermittent detection can come from the control, so we check it with several known-good pans.
  • We give a written price before opening a built-in cooktop.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F (flashing, induction)F (flashing, induction) questions
Why is F flashing on my induction cooktop?

The zone is on but no suitable pan is detected. Pan lifted, off-center or non-magnetic are the usual reasons, and the element shuts off by itself within about 30 seconds.

Does flashing F mean the cooktop is broken?

No. It is a warning that tells you to place cookware. Put a flat magnetic pan centered on the zone and the display should return to normal heat settings.

How do I know if my pan works on induction?

Hold a refrigerator magnet to the bottom of the pan. If it sticks firmly, the pan should work. If it does not, the cooktop cannot heat it and F will flash.
